Kuching: The cultural heritage and spirit of unity embodied in the Gawai Day celebration must continue to be preserved to maintain Sarawak's uniqueness as a state rich in cultural diversity, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. He emphasized the significance of Gawai Day as a vital traditional celebration for the Dayak community, serving as a symbol of the cultural diversity that Sarawak prides itself on.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tiong expressed hope that the cultural treasure of Gawai Day would continue to be appreciated and preserved. He stressed the importance of strengthening the spirit of unity, mutual respect, and harmony among all races to maintain Sarawak's uniqueness, enriched by its cultural diversity. He highlighted that the celebration not only marks the end of the harvest season but also reflects the cultural heritage, customs, and noble values that have been passed down through generations and preserved to this day.
Tiong also reminded the public to prioritize safety throughout the festive celebration and holiday season. He advised moderation and responsibility in the consumption of tuak or alcohol, emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Tiong urged those returning to their hometowns or traveling to any destination during this holiday season to observe traffic regulations and drive carefully and responsibly.
In extending Gawai Day greetings, Tiong conveyed his best wishes to the entire Dayak community celebrating the festival.
