GAS DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT BETWEEN PETRONAS AND PETROS FINALIZED, GOVERNMENT TO FINE-TUNE DETAILS

KUALA LUMPUR: The discussions concerning gas distribution between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) in Sarawak have reached a resolution, with the government currently engaged in refining the specifics of the agreement, including its parameters and implications, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar confirmed that a productive dialogue with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has led to a clear decision on the issue. Speaking to reporters after launching the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Office at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Anwar stated, “Discussion is settled but we are looking into details, parameters and legal implications.”

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari had previously commented on the matter, indicating that the responsibility to announce the details of the gas distribution formula rests with the prime minister. “I leave it to the PM to announce (the
details of the resolution formula). Just wait,” he remarked after attending the 4th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Conference.

In an earlier interview with TVSarawak, Abang Johari mentioned that the gas distribution issue could be seen as resolved, pending an official statement from Anwar. He noted that the matter primarily involves legal considerations, where both the Petroleum Development Act 1974, referenced by Petronas, and the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958, enforced by Sarawak, are expected to coexist.
