Kuala lumpur: The drafting of a new E-Commerce Act must be expedited to strengthen consumer protection and ensure that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and local traders can compete fairly within an increasingly complex digital ecosystem. Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Datuk Dr. Fuziah Salleh, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, highlighting the need to address existing gaps in the Electronic Commerce Act 2006, particularly concerning consumer protection and cross-border transactions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fuziah stressed the importance of keeping the country's e-commerce framework in line with technological advancements and evolving consumer and business practices. She pointed out the necessity of protecting MSMEs and local traders, emphasizing that while competitive pricing benefits consumers, it should not lead to unbalanced competition that threatens the market share and livelihoods of local traders.
Fuziah further noted that foreign sellers doing business with Malaysian consumers must adhere to clear standards of responsibility and regulatory requirements to safeguard consumers against fraud, unsafe products, and disputes. She also highlighted the need for clearly defined responsibilities for e-commerce platforms, as these platforms are increasingly influencing how products are marketed, sold, and delivered.
Moreover, Fuziah underscored that foreign participation in the e-commerce sector should bring added value to Malaysia through investments, job opportunities, talent development, and technology transfer, while creating more opportunities for local enterprises within the supply chain. She reiterated that the goal is to establish a healthier ecosystem where MSMEs and local traders can grow and compete on a level playing field.
Last Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the government's commitment to expediting the drafting of an e-commerce bill. This measure aims to enhance facilitation and regulation in the sector, aligning with the rapid growth of digital business. Anwar stressed that this step is vital for ensuring the orderly development of the e-commerce ecosystem while providing support and protection for all stakeholders, including young people and new entrepreneurs.
