Fuel Subsidies Protect Against Global Oil Price Shocks

Rabat:Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong has stated that the government's maintenance of fuel subsidies is aimed at protecting all segments of society, including the middle-income group, from the impact of global oil price shocks.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Liew emphasized that the approach is designed to balance inflation control with addressing economic challenges amid global oil market volatility. He highlighted that the implementation of BUDI95 in September 2025 occurred when oil prices were low, and there were calls to float petrol prices and provide cash handouts.

He further explained that had the government floated petrol prices according to market rates at that time, many Malaysians would not have been shielded from the price fluctuations, particularly during challenging periods like March and April. The strategy aims to protect the majority of Malaysians, ensuring their economic stability for as long as possible.
