Kuala lumpur: A retired policeman who began saving with just RM33 some 48 years ago has proven that consistent saving eventually pays off after being selected to perform the haj this year. Mohd Daud Hamdan, 72, shared his journey of financial discipline and faith, highlighting the long-awaited opportunity to fulfill a cherished dream.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Daud began his savings journey with Tabung Haji upon joining the police force in 1978. Despite earning a modest salary and facing numerous financial commitments, he was determined to save what little he could. He reflected on the importance of starting small and maintaining consistency, stating that his persistence had finally led him to Makkah.
The Jasin, Melaka native recounted how a Friday sermon in 2004 inspired him to register for haj while he was stationed in Sabah. The sermon emphasized the importance of early registration, prompting Mohd Daud to take immediate action to secure his place for the pilgrimage. He expressed his gratitude for being chosen to perform haj at the age of 72, viewing it as a significant blessing and opportunity despite the lengthy wait of 22 years.
In the midst of his joy, Mohd Daud also spoke about the emotional weight of performing the pilgrimage without his wife, Maimon Mohamad, who passed away four years ago. The father of four often finds himself reminiscing about their shared dream of undertaking the spiritual journey together. Although he is physically alone, he feels her presence accompanying him in spirit. To honor her memory, Mohd Daud will be performing haj on behalf of his late wife through badal haj.
