Terengganu: The Terengganu Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning to the public regarding frequent rain and thunderstorms expected from today until Saturday. The department has urged residents to be vigilant, particularly when planning maritime activities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rosli Zakaria, the director of MetMalaysia, mentioned that the current weather pattern is attributed to the Southwest Monsoon season, which is anticipated to continue until September or October. Despite this, East Coast states, including Terengganu, are expected to experience a week of rainy weather accompanied by thunderstorms.
The department has highlighted that strong winds and high waves will be present along coastal areas during these thunderstorms. Rosli Zakaria emphasized the need for caution, especially during the peak of the squid jiggling season, due to the unpredictable weather conditions. He advised the public to consistently check weather forecasts through platforms such as the MetMalaysia website, the myCuaca mobile application, and the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638 before undertaking any activities.
In a tragic incident linked to the adverse weather, a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian at 10.30 pm yesterday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two young girls. The boat, which was carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40, encountered heavy rain and rough seas during a storm, leading to the accident.
