Formula 1 Returns to Malaysia with Record-Breaking Attendance

Sepang:Nine years after its last race, Formula 1 made a dramatic return to the Sepang International Circuit, thrilling fans with speed, drama, and a challenging wet track. The 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia faced a 93-minute delay due to heavy rain, but the inclement weather did not deter thousands of fans from filling the iconic circuit, eager for the action to begin.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the event saw record-breaking attendance with 261,000 spectators over the race weekend, surpassing the previous record of 126,690 set in 2008. The race also attracted significant attention with the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was seen braving the rain, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, along with top leaders from Bahrain and Brunei.

The return of F1 to Malaysia was a result of discussions involving King Ibrahim and Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, alongside government cooperation, ensuring the Bahrain GP remained part of the 2026 F1 calendar after previous geopolitical tensions led to its cancellation. Malaysia had previously hosted the Malaysian GP from 1999 to 2017.

The race itself was a spectacle, with Lewis Hamilton finishing third and expressing his admiration for the enthusiastic crowd. Max Verstappen claimed victory, while Kimi Antonelli secured second place, maintaining his lead in the drivers' standings. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto highlighted the demanding conditions during practice due to the Malaysian heat.

Beyond the track, the event offered a cultural exchange with Bahraini pavilions and traditional displays, enhancing the international experience for visitors. Despite the challenging weather, the atmosphere remained electric, showcasing Malaysia's passion for F1.

Prime Minister Anwar mentioned that discussions are underway for Malaysia to potentially host F1 again, with talks expected to continue with F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. For the fans who endured the challenging conditions, the prospect of F1's return to Sepang remains a hopeful possibility.
