George town: Former Penang and national footballer Dzulkifli Ali, a key defensive player for the state team in the 1980s, has passed away due to heart and intestinal complications. Dzulkifli, 65, died at Seberang Jaya Hospital after being admitted three days ago, following a history of hospital visits for a heart condition and intestinal issues.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dzulkifli's daughter, Nor Amylia, 32, shared that her father was placed in a medically induced coma after his oxygen levels dropped, necessitating surgery for abdominal complications. The family had a final opportunity to spend time with Dzulkifli, during which he asked for forgiveness and recited prayers with them.

Nor Amylia mentioned that despite his declining health, her father tried to appear strong for the family. His condition seemed stable until the hospital informed them of a sudden critical turn. Dzulkifli had been unable to eat for days before his hospital admission.

Dzulkifli was deeply connected to his family, often frequenting their eatery in Bagan Jermal. His daughter noted his resilience and reluctance to show vulnerability, despite his severe internal health issues.

The family mourns his death, which echoes the loss of their brother, Muhammad Farid Esmith, who passed away in an accident last year. Dzulkifli was laid to rest beside his son at Bagan Jermal Islamic Cemetery.

Penang State Malay Football Ex-Players Association Secretary Mahathir Mohd Jamal Mohd commented on the significant loss to the football community, highlighting Dzulkifli's role as a cherished member of the association.

Dzulkifli Ali, also known as Zulkifli Ali, was a prominent figure in Malaysian football during the 1980s, recognized for his tough defensive skills. He played for both Penang and the national team, Harimau Malaya, and faced international football stars during his career. Even after retiring, he remained active in football, participating in friendly matches and veteran tournaments.
