Former F1 Driver Alex Yoong To Coach National e-Racing Squad

Kuala lumpur: Former Malaysian Formula One driver Alex Yoong has been appointed coach of the national e-Racing squad. Malaysia Esports Federation president Muhammad Naim Al Amin Saharudin said the appointment is part of preparations for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and the 2027 SEA Games.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Muhammad Naim highlighted that Alex's experience and expertise will be a key advantage for the e-Racing team. Yoong will commence his full-time duties in April to ensure that the training programme is more structured and high-impact. This decision was revealed after a working committee meeting with the National Sports Council (NSC).

Muhammad Naim further announced a significant development for esports athletes as they have been included in the NSC Podium Programme for the first time. This inclusion marks official recognition for the athletes involved. The full-time category now features several titles, including eFootball, Identity V, and e-Racing. He also mentioned that the women's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang squad has been placed in the semi-podium category, while the men's squad is in the phased category.

Commenting on the upcoming Asian Games, Muhammad Naim explained that 11 titles will be contested. Malaysia has already secured automatic qualification for Honor of Kings. The remaining 10 titles will be determined through qualifying rounds that will be held at a later date.
