Melaka: Former commandos joining the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) are expected to contribute up to 20 years of service, said Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari. He stated that the 220 commandos selected for AKPS comprise personnel completing their service with the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and aged at least 40.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, after completing their military service, these commandos will be absorbed into AKPS. Adly Zahari mentioned, “Most are around 40 years old, so they can still serve effectively for the next two decades,” during a press briefing at the Santuni MADANI ATM Melaka programme at Raudhatul Jannah Mosque, Bukit Katil.
Adly further explained that those selected include members of the elite Special Service Group (GGK), Paratroopers (PARA), Naval Special Forces (PASKAL), and Air Force Special Forces (PASKAU). He emphasized that these elite troops bring extensive expertise that can strengthen border security, and many have served in strategic areas nationwide, making them well-suited for duties at the country’s entry points.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling Budget 2026, announced that priority would be given to military veterans to fill the 220 positions required by AKPS to achieve full operational readiness.
