Forest Fire Along Desaru-Pengerang Highway Persists as 90 Hectares Still Ablaze

Desaru: A forest fire that has been blazing across approximately 150 hectares along the Desaru-Pengerang Highway since last Saturday remains a significant concern, with 90 hectares still burning as of 6.30 pm yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations centre reported receiving an emergency call at 9.30 pm on March 21. This prompted the deployment of a team from the Punggai Fire and Rescue Station to the scene, located about six kilometres away. The fire, involving forest and dry scrubland, has been exacerbated by strong winds, increasing the risk of further spread.

Efforts to combat the blaze have seen some success, with 60 hectares or 40 per cent of the affected area extinguished. However, the remaining 90 hectares, accounting for 60 per cent of the total area, continues to burn. Firefighting operations in Sector A are ongoing, utilizing a direct attack method. This involves a 700-foot hose line supported by two breaching tools, three nozzles, and a Godiva GP10/10 pump sourced from nearby water reserves. Seven personnel and a single Fire Rescue Tender are actively engaged in the operation.

Meanwhile, operations in Sector B have been put on hold by the Sungai Rengit Fire and Rescue Station, which remains on standby to provide additional support if necessary. The challenging conditions, including thick smoke, have reduced visibility along the Punggai Bypass Highway towards Sebana Cove.

To ensure the safety of road users, the Royal Malaysia Police from Bayu Damai Police Station have been dispatched to close the affected road and manage traffic. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far.
