KUALA LUMPUR: The death toll from the floods across Malaysia has risen to six, following the drowning of two elderly men who were monitoring livestock in Machang, Kelantan, this afternoon. Despite this tragic increase, the overall number of flood victims nationwide has decreased to 140,896, down from 148,024 earlier in the day.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the state of Perak has been affected by floods again, resulting in the evacuation of 130 individuals from 36 families to 10 temporary relief centers located in the districts of Larut, Matang, Selama, Hilir Perak, Kinta, and Kampar. Meanwhile, the number of flood victims in Pahang, Johor, and Melaka has seen a slight rise, while a decrease has been noted in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, and Perlis.
Pahang has reported an increase in flood victims, with 1,230 affected individuals from 421 families across the Raub, Jerantut, and Lipis districts. Currently, 26 relief centers are operational statewide, with Raub recording the highest numbe
r of victims. Sultan Al-Sultan Abdullah of Pahang has called on the Malaysian Meteorological Department and relevant authorities to provide frequent updates on weather forecasts and flood occurrences to ensure public safety, particularly in high-risk areas.
In Johor, the number of flood victims has surged to 728 from 199 families. State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani indicated that several rivers, including Sungai Muar and Sungai Tangkak, have reached dangerous water levels. Despite the severity of the situation, clear skies are anticipated in several districts tonight.
Melaka has seen a slight increase in flood victims to 241 people from 58 families, with the highest concentration in the Jasin district. The state’s disaster management committee continues to monitor the situation closely.
Kelantan has experienced a reduction in the number of flood victims, now totaling 88,742 individuals housed in 253 relief centers. However, major rivers in the state remain at dangerous leve
ls, exacerbating concerns about ongoing flood risks.
Terengganu has also recorded a decrease in flood victims, with 40,604 individuals currently placed in relief centers. Despite the decline, 45 roads remain closed across the state due to flooding.
In Kedah, the number of flood victims has decreased to 7,954 from 2,398 families. All affected individuals are sheltered in 48 relief centers. Similarly, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis have reported declines in the number of flood victims, with emergency services continuing to provide necessary aid and shelter.
The authorities across affected regions remain vigilant, focusing on providing relief and ensuring the safety of residents as they navigate the challenges posed by ongoing floods.
