Seremban: Flash floods that struck the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and caused traffic congestion highlight the need for a contingency plan and a comprehensive study, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The Seremban Member of Parliament emphasized the importance of immediate action from the highway operator to ensure the infrastructure can cope with changing weather patterns and surrounding development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke urged the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and PLUS to take further action, noting that new projects being explored and developed along parts of the highway might be contributing to the flooding. He stated that if development is the cause of the flash floods, the developers and contractors must take responsibility and fulfill their roles.
The Transport Minister's comments came after he presented contributions totaling RM275,000 to 35 mosques and 160 surau within the Seremban parliamentary constituency and the Chennah state constituency. Loke underscored that flooding on highways not only disrupts the convenience of road users but also poses significant safety risks.
Continuous heavy rain yesterday resulted in flash floods at the Nilai Rest and Service Area (R and R), with water overflowing into dining areas of premises there. Videos circulating on social media showed brown-colored water rapidly flowing and inundating parts of the dining area, pedestrian walkways, and parking spaces near the rest area.
