Five To Seven Episodes Of Heavy Rain Expected Through Northeast Monsoon – MET Malaysia DG

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) is estimating about five to seven episodes of heavy continuous downpour throughout the Northeast Monsoon period of 2025/2026, which is expected to begin early November till March 2026. Its director-general, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, revealed that the heavy rain is expected to have a significant impact on Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang during the monsoon’s initial phase between November to December 2025. In addition, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak have the potential to experience episodes of continuous heavy rain during December and January 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohd Hisham emphasized the importance of integrated readiness and the need to not solely depend on forecasts. Instead, ensuring logistics, communications, resources, and swift action are well-managed when disaster strikes is crucial.

“To strengthen weather monitoring, MET Malaysia currently manages 32 main meteorological stations, 382 automatic and conventional weather stations, eight upper air stations, 18 weather radar stations, six Wind Shear Detection System stations, and three meteorological satellite receiver stations,” he stated. This extensive system network allows for the detection of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in real time, enhancing the country’s readiness to face potential disasters.

Dr Mohd Hisham shared these insights with reporters following the 2025 National Climate Forum and Disaster Readiness event held today. The advancements in weather monitoring techniques are expected to bolster Malaysia’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.
