Kuala terengganu: Five markets in Terengganu have been selected as Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Compliant Markets this year to ensure traders comply with regulations and adopt good business practices, particularly at locations frequented by the public and tourists. Terengganu KPDN director Mohd Mufsi Lat stated that the five markets were Pasar Payang 2 in Kuala Terengganu, Pasar Binjai in Kemaman, Dungun Central Market, Pasar Bukit Payong, and Pasar Kampung Raja in Besut.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the locations were chosen based on their significance as business hubs frequented by both local communities and tourists. In 2026, Pasar Payang 2 was selected as a KPDN Compliant Market and KPDN Compliant Tourism Focus Area, involving over 200 traders. The programme is KPDN's effort to raise awareness and promote compliance among traders, particularly regarding regulations, laws, and good business practices, as stated by Mohd Mufsi Lat during the launch of the Terengganu KPDN Compliant Market and Compliant Tourism Focus Area Programme at Pasar Payang 2.
The programme includes briefing sessions by KPDN, in collaboration with Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT), Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), Ministry of Health (MOH), and Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC). These briefings provide traders with information on legal compliance, registration and licensing, safety, food hygiene, and tourism industry-related matters.
Self-regulation elements have been introduced at Pasar Payang 2, including the provision of price tags displaying information on prices and items for sale. Price-tag stickers were provided to all participating traders to facilitate consumer awareness of goods' prices. Additionally, a self-weighing kiosk has been designated at each market under the programme to ensure transparency in terms of the quantity of goods purchased by consumers. The traders' association at Pasar Payang will also work with KPDN as its eyes and ears to report any problems or complaints arising in this area.
Apart from the KPDN Compliant Market and Compliant Tourism Focus Area initiatives, Terengganu KPDN is also implementing the Compliant Stopover Zone initiative in collaboration with PLUS Malaysia Berhad, involving rest and service areas (RandRs) in Kemaman, Dungun, and Hulu Terengganu.
