First-ever Integrated EV Charging Hub Set for North-South Expressway

Seremban: Malaysia’s inaugural integrated electric vehicle (EV) charging hub is set to be constructed at the North-South Expressway southbound Rest and Relax (R and R) area in Seremban, with an estimated investment of RM12 million. The initiative, anticipated to be completed by 2027, aligns with the government’s strategy to expedite the shift towards low-carbon energy and mobility, as stated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta highlighted the significance of transforming R and R areas beyond mere rest stops or refueling points, accommodating the increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads. The minister shared these insights during the groundbreaking ceremony of the charging hub, with PLUS Malaysia Bhd chairman Datuk Mohamad Nasir Ab Latif in attendance.

During the event, a collaboration between PLUS and Yinson GreenTech, Yinson Holding’s green technology arm, was unveiled. Through Terra ChargEV Sdn Bhd, the partnership aims to develop the EV hub, supporting Malaysia’s commitment to low-carbon mobility.

Nanta emphasized that the development would convert highway R and R sites into comprehensive mobility service destinations, integrating user needs across food, beverage, and modern public facilities. The hub will feature 20 fast-charging points and public amenities like restrooms, a prayer room, and energy-efficient lighting.

He noted that the EV hub will include fast chargers with capacities up to 350 kilowatts (kW) and incorporate solar infrastructure, underscoring a dedication to renewable energy practices. Nanta also mentioned the project’s economic benefits, including job creation and enhanced quality of life through eco-friendly facilities.

The government is also focused on establishing 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025, with PLUS contributing to this goal. Nanta stated that there are currently 140 fast-charging points on Malaysian highways, including 114 on PLUS, which help alleviate range anxiety for EV users. An additional 50 charging points are planned for next year.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir explained that the southbound Seremban R and R was selected for the hub to enhance its redevelopment and establish it as Malaysia’s first sustainable R and R.
