Pulau burung: A pile of rubbish at the Pulau Burung Solid Waste Landfill Site here caught fire last night. No casualties were reported.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said that fire engines from the Nibong Tebal Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were dispatched to the location following an emergency call received at 11.36 pm.

"Upon arrival, the fire brigade's Operational Response Team found that a rubbish fire had broken out at the landfill. Firefighting and containment operations were immediately carried out, including the creation of a firebreak to prevent the fire from spreading," said Francis. He added that the fire, which spanned an area of 120 by 90 feet, or 1,003 square metres, was brought under control at 12.30 am. However, as of 7.30 am today, overhaul operations continued to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

Francis detailed that the firefighting operation was divided into two sectors: Sector A, managed by the Sungai Bakap BBP, and Sector B, managed by the Nibong Tebal BBP. As of this morning, approximately 40 per cent of the fire in Sector A has yet to be extinguished, while 50 per cent remains in Sector B. Additional support came from the Bandar Perda BBP and Valdor, Permatang Tinggi, and Nibong Tebal Volunteer Fire Brigades.
