Fire Breaks Out At Kulim Landfill

Padang cina: A landfill in Kulim Hi-Tech caught fire today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kulim Zone 3 chief Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Faizal Sulaiman reported that the department received a call at 6.30 pm regarding the incident. A team of 12 firefighters from the Kulim Hi-Tech Fire and Rescue Station was deployed to the scene, with assistance from private companies. The operation is ongoing, and no casualties have been reported.

Mohd Faizal further stated that the landfill covers an estimated 1.42 hectares, and the fire continues to spread. Additional logistics, equipment, and machinery are being mobilised to control the fire.

Meanwhile, Kedah Department of Environment (DOE) director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab noted that the fire has impacted Cells 1 and 2 of the landfill. The DOE is conducting aerial monitoring using drones and has installed gas measuring devices to assess air quality around the site. The Air Pollution Index (API) at the nearest monitoring station in Kulim Hi-Tech recorded a reading of 60, classified as moderate. Continuous monitoring will ensure compliance with the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

An investigation under Section 29A(2) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 will be conducted. The public is advised to avoid the area.
