FINAS Urges IPT Students To Prioritise Ethics In AI Use

Tasek gelugor: The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) has urged students of higher learning institutions (IPT) to prioritise ethics in their use of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that the rapidly evolving technology must be used responsibly to avoid potential misuse. FINAS chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib highlighted the importance of equipping students with both technical knowledge and ethical awareness to keep pace with the fast-moving advancements in AI.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azmir remarked, ‘We can’t escape AI as it’s moving too fast. What seems imperfect today may soon become highly sophisticated, realistic and even exceed our expectations within days or weeks.’ He made these comments while speaking to reporters after officiating the 7th Convocation Ceremony of Politeknik Metro Tasek Gelugor. Azmir emphasised the need for IPTs to integrate AI ethics into their curricula, ensuring that students employ the technology wisely and constructively.

Azmir further revealed that FINAS is in the process of drafting amendments to the FINAS Act 1981 (Act 244) to better regulate the creative industry in response to emerging technologies. He expressed concern over the potential for audiences to be misled by irresponsible content creators.

In his speech, Azmir also underscored the creative industry’s significant role in shaping national identity and contributing to Malaysia’s economy. He noted that sectors such as film, animation, music, design, and digital media not only generate employment but also drive substantial economic value. He encouraged the graduates, stating, ‘Today’s graduates are tomorrow’s innovators, solution builders and leaders of Malaysia’s creative economy.’

Earlier in the ceremony, 115 graduates received their diplomas in Information Technology (Digital Technology) and Video and Film Studies, marking a milestone in their academic journey.
