FIA President Highlights Preparedness for Geopolitical Disruptions

Sepang:The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) must be prepared to handle unforeseen disruptions, including geopolitical instability, through effective risk management and assessment, stated its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ben Sulayem emphasized that major disruptions are not new to the governing body of world motorsport, referencing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts in certain regions. He highlighted the importance of being ready for unexpected events and noted that the FIA has mechanisms in place to manage such risks, which can also arise from natural causes. Addressing concerns about the impact of the West Asia conflict on the economics and operations of global motorsport, Ben Sulayem insisted that external circumstances should not dictate the sport's trajectory. He cited the successful staging of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia as a testament to the motorsport community's resilience and cooperation in the face of disruption. The Bahrain Grand Prix, originally scheduled for April 10-12, 2026, was relocated to the Sepang International Circuit on October 2-4 due to the conflict in West Asia. Ben Sulayem underscored the importance of security and safety for participants and expressed confidence in the smooth approval process of the 2027 calendar by the World Motor Sport Council. In response to speculation about Malaysia potentially hosting Bahrain's pre-season testing in 2027, Ben Sulayem remained optimistic about maintaining the current schedule, dismissing rumors in favor of factual planning. He confirmed that FIA-sanctioned events in the region, such as the World Rally Championship, are proceeding as planned, stressing the voluntary nature of participation amid safety concerns.
