Federal, Sarawak Governments Commit To Equal Opportunities For Women

Sarawak: The federal and Sarawak governments both recognise the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, social participation, and economic activities. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that with strong government support, women’s empowerment has been firmly integrated into the state’s development agenda.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted the progress in women’s political participation, particularly in Parliament. Despite women comprising only 13.5 percent of members of parliament and 16.1 percent of the MADANI government cabinet, he noted their dynamic and dedicated roles in advancing state initiatives.

Abang Johari stated that in Sarawak, women possess the qualities, capabilities, and representation needed to drive the state’s socio-economic transformation. He emphasized that women’s empowerment is not only about equality and fairness but is also a fundamental pillar of social and economic progress.

He further noted the importance of empowerment in enabling women to recognise their self-worth, make their own choices, and influence social change for themselves and others. With women making up nearly 50 percent of Sarawak’s close to three million population, their empowerment is seen as critical in addressing emerging socio-economic challenges.
