Kuala lumpur: Failure to protect the integrity and courage of whistleblowers could create a climate of fear among honest officers, discouraging them from speaking out against abuses of power, said Former High Court Judge of Malaya and Borneo Datuk Syed Ahmad Idid Syed Abdullah.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, speaking at the 2nd Wisdom Malaysia Conference 2026, Syed Ahmad Idid expressed concern that suppressing and intimidating whistleblowers instead of investigating corruption allegations merely exposes a nation to the risk of even larger financial scandals and crimes in the future.

He stated, "When you discourage whistleblowing, you are actually making sure that there will be nobody honest in the organisation, when crimes are being committed, who will dare to speak up. Whistleblowing is not slander. It is an act of justice aimed at stopping corruption and fixing dangerous workplace problems," during a dialogue session titled 'The Life, Conscience and Costs of the Principled'.

Regarding the financial impact of eradicating graft, Syed Ahmad Idid highlighted that if all illicit proceeds from corruption and leakages were successfully recovered, those funds could finance massive basic infrastructure developments for the public. He noted that the recovered funds could easily finance the construction of at least two general hospitals in every state, as well as 20 to 50 high-quality schools nationwide.

He added, "With those funds, we can provide the best facilities, complete school equipment and better training for teachers to elevate Malaysia's education system to world-class standards. A superior education system would not only produce outstanding human capital, but also foster far more effective security personnel and national athletes."

Syed Ahmad Idid also urged all quarters not to offer skewed or lenient interpretations of corrupt practices, calling on society to uphold the principles of justice and integrity to safeguard the nation's future. The conference, organised by Kerjaya One PLT, serves as a platform for current and former industry leaders to share their knowledge, experience, and insights with leaders, emerging leaders, and professionals.
