Exercise Freedom Of Speech Responsibly, Not To Provoke – Lee

Kuala Lumpur: Freedom of speech is a fundamental right that must be exercised responsibly, as using it to provoke or insult others directly undermines democratic values and threatens national stability. National Unity Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasized this in a recent statement, highlighting the importance of mutual respect, tolerance, and understanding among Malaysia’s diverse communities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee expressed his full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call to end all forms of racial and religious mockery, as well as any inflammatory statements that could disrupt the harmony and unity of Malaysia’s multiracial, multi-religious society. He pointed out that recent incidents involving racially and religiously charged remarks, and specific insensitive actions from certain groups, pose a threat to the nation’s unity.

Lee warned that if such actions and statements go unchecked, they could sow division, fuel hatred and discrimination, and even lead to violence. He urged political leaders, public figures, and social media users to refrain from making statements that could incite hostility, instead promoting messages of inclusivity and respect.

He further called on authorities to take firm action against those who use hateful rhetoric to disrupt peace, emphasizing that unity is Malaysia’s greatest strength. Lee rallied for the nation’s diversity to be upheld as a source of pride and strength, rather than division.

On March 6, Prime Minister Anwar reminded all parties not to exploit opportunities to incite racial sentiments and spread hatred.
