President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia took place from April 15 to 17, following an invitation from His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia. This marked Xi’s second official trip to Malaysia in 12 years, with his previous visit in 2013 elevating diplomatic relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The visit was part of President Xi’s series of state visits to Southeast Asia, commencing with a trip to Vietnam. This marked his first series of state visits in the year. Malaysia and China have maintained diplomatic relations since May 31, 1974, celebrating their 50th anniversary last year.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner since 2009, maintaining this status for 16 consecutive years. In 2024, the total trade between the two nations was valued at RM484.12 billion, representing 16.8 percent of Malaysia’s total global trade, which amounted to RM2.88 trillion.
