Ex-Sepak Takraw Players Eyed For National Teqball Squad

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysia Teqball Association (MTA) plans to scout for new talent, including among former sepak takraw players, to strengthen the national squad ahead of several major tournaments, including the 2026 Asian Games. According to BERNAMA News Agency, MTA President J. Siva Kumar emphasized that former sepak takraw players possess an advantage due to their basic skills, which are similar to teqball. This advantage could raise the country's level of play. He noted, however, that players cannot rely solely on their sepak takraw skills, as teqball demands mastery of different techniques and game strategies. Siva Kumar expressed a desire to invite former sepak takraw players and establish cooperation with the Sepak Takraw Federation of Malaysia. He cited a past success story of a female athlete from Sabah, who transitioned from sepak takraw to teqball and succeeded in international competitions. Despite the potential talent pool, the MTA faces challenges, particularly in terms of securing a permanent training facility. The lack of a dedicated training venue poses a significant constraint, as it may lead potential recruits to question the seriousness of the association's efforts. Siva Kumar mentioned that a hall the size of a badminton or sepak takraw court would suffice for consistent training. Looking ahead to the Asian Games, Malaysia is set to compete in five categories. Siva Kumar acknowledged that Thailand is likely the main challenger but remains optimistic about Malaysia's chances. He believes that with systematic training, the team could improve upon their bronze medal performance at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, potentially aiming for silver. Before the Asian Games, the national squad is scheduled to participate in several warm-up tournaments, including the Asian Beach Games, the Asian Indoor Games, and the Malaysia Teqball League in the Klang Valley.
