Essential Goods Supply in Malaysia Stable Amid Global Challenges: Mydin

Kuala lumpur: The supply of essential goods in Malaysia remains stable despite ongoing uncertainties in global supply chains, says Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin) managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin. He stated that careful planning by the retail sector and the smooth operation of the domestic agricultural industry have strengthened confidence in the security of food supplies for the local market.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, uninterrupted planting and harvesting activities, supported by sufficient agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, have helped maintain market stability, with no signs of shortages in the near future. Ameer Ali noted that planting and harvesting activities are proceeding as usual, with adequate fertiliser supplies. He referenced Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu's assurance that urea fertiliser supplies are sufficient for the current planting season.

On imported goods, Ameer Ali highlighted that local retailers have adopted forward-buying strategies to ensure a consistent and adequate supply of essential imported products. He urged consumers to avoid panic buying, emphasizing that supply stability extends beyond food items to include products such as textiles and clothing. He reassured the public that supplies remain stable and adequate, advising against excessive worry and wasteful behaviour.

Ameer Ali also welcomed the sizeable allocation for the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) and Rahmah Basic Aid (SARA) programmes under Budget 2026, describing the initiative as having a multiplier effect on the domestic economy. He noted that traders are grateful for such assistance, as it boosts consumer spending power and creates a significant positive impact on the economy, particularly benefiting small businesses.

In response to changing consumer lifestyles, Mydin is adapting by opening more than 20 new outlets this year under a smaller community-store concept, aiming to offer a complete range of essential goods.
