EPF Contributions for Non-Citizens and GDP Projections to Dominate Dewan Rakyat Session

Kuala Lumpur: The suggestion of Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for non-citizens and the projections for Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the years 2022 through 2024 are anticipated to be the central topics of discussion during today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Paper on the Parliament website indicates that Chiew Choon Man (PH-Miri) plans to query the Prime Minister during Minister’s Question Time regarding the potential EPF contributions for non-citizens. He is expected to question whether this proposal might impose additional burdens on employers and divert the EPF’s focus from its primary objective of securing citizens’ retirement savings.

Following this, Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) is set to request that the Prime Minister disclose the real and nominal values and growth rates of Malaysia’s GDP for each of the years from 2022 to 2024. This inquiry aims to provide clarity on the country’s economic health and growth trajectory.

In addition, there will be discussions on potential amendments to enhance protections for domestic violence victims, with a particular emphasis on women. This topic will be addressed by Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH-Port Dickson) in a question directed to the Women, Family and Community Development Minister during the oral question and answer session.

Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) will also question the Home Minister about the effectiveness of the Quick Response (QR) codes trial, set to start in January 2025, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The trial aims to alleviate congestion issues at the country’s entry points using 40 special lanes equipped with this new system.

The session will also include the first reading of nine bills, notably the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Bill 2025, the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025, the Employees Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Consumer Credit Bill 2025.

Subsequently, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the second reading of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Parliamentary Service Bill 2025, both to be presented by the Prime Minister.
