Ipoh: The Energy Commission (ST) is targeting 5,000 visitors for the 2026 Energy Smart Carnival (Karnival Bijak Tenaga (KBT)), which will be held at Stadium Indera Mulia in Ipoh, Perak, on July 25 and 26.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Energy Commission Strategy and Corporate Affairs Division Director Nurhafiza Mohamed Hasan stated that the inaugural carnival, held in conjunction with the commission's 25th Silver Jubilee celebration, aims to enhance public energy literacy. This event will promote smart, efficient, and safe use of electricity and gas through an education and entertainment (edutainment) approach.
Nurhafiza explained the intent behind the carnival, emphasizing that energy should not be perceived as complicated. The edutainment concept is designed to facilitate learning in an enjoyable manner, encouraging individuals to practice energy-efficient habits at home. Emphasizing energy literacy, she also highlighted the importance of using energy-efficient and safe electrical appliances.
The KBT 2026 will offer various educational programmes, including Pocket Talk sessions on energy efficiency, electricity and piped gas safety, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) career pathways. Additionally, there will be sessions raising awareness about electricity theft, which is often associated with bitcoin mining.
For younger attendees, interactive activities such as the Wira Bijak Tenaga 2026 competition will be available, aiming to instil awareness from a young age. These activities are designed to teach children how to select electrical appliances that bear energy efficiency labels.
Homemakers will have the chance to participate in cooking demonstrations by celebrity chef Anis Nabilah, who will share insights on using energy-efficient appliances in meal preparation.
The carnival's highlight is the prize presentation ceremony for winners of the Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). This programme previously attracted about 65,000 students nationwide, with only the top 10 participants being honoured as winners. This initiative is part of the efforts to nurture a more energy-literate generation.
Visitors to the carnival can also look forward to a RAHMAH Sale, offering discounts on energy-efficient electrical appliances. Additionally, lucky draws will feature prizes such as an iPhone 17 Air, a 55-inch television, and an electric motorcycle. Musical performances by singers Zamani, Ara Johari, and Syafiq Farhain will add to the event's appeal.
Admission to the carnival, scheduled for 9 am to 6 pm, is free.
