Energy Commission Hosts ASEAN’s First Pilot Summer School For Energy Regulators

Selangor: The Energy Commission of Malaysia (ST), in its capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Energy Regulators Network (AERN), is hosting the inaugural Pilot Summer School for Energy Regulators in the ASEAN region. The event is taking place from September 22 to 26 at the PETRONAS Leadership Centre in Selangor.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the region. It is inspired by the well-established Summer School on Regulation held annually in Florence. The five-day training session aims to enhance regulatory capacity by bringing together 35 mid-level professionals from regulatory bodies and utilities across ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste. Participants will engage in activities designed to exchange best practices and lay the groundwork for the future ASEAN School of Regulation.

The programme’s curriculum includes expert-led lectures, case studies, interactive group work, and field visits, focusing on crucial topics such as cross-border power trade, market integration, renewable energy adoption, and regulatory harmonisation within ASEAN. Organized in collaboration with the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the event also partners with the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), European University Institute, and receives support from the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE).

The opening ceremony was officiated by AERN 2025 Chair and ST Chief Executive Officer, Siti Safinah Salleh, representing the Chief Secretary to the Government and ST Chairman, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Siti Safinah emphasized Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, underscoring the Summer School’s role in enhancing the region’s regulatory capabilities. The initiative supports the ASEAN Power Grid and aims to advance ASEAN’s collective energy transition goals.

As the event’s coordinator and host, ST reiterated its dedication to fostering regional cooperation and ensuring that regulators and utilities are well-prepared to lead ASEAN towards a secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy future.
