Accra:Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Lim Hui Ying urged employers to leverage Job Coach services to assist workers with disabilities in adapting to their duties and work environment, thereby enhancing inclusive employment opportunities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, these services are designed to help employers understand the needs of persons with disabilities (PwD) and adopt appropriate communication methods to ensure effective job performance. Lim emphasized that with proper guidance, workplace adjustments, and mutual understanding, more individuals with disabilities could excel in their roles and contribute productively.
She highlighted the importance of providing training opportunities, identifying talents, and creating a fair and safe working environment. Addressing the 'Langkah Bersama Berapit 2.0 Careers and Opportunities for Youths with Disabilities' program, Lim also noted the concerns of parents regarding the future of their children with disabilities post-schooling, including access to skills training and employers' willingness to hire and guide them.
Lim stressed that differences in communication, learning, or social interaction, especially among neurodivergent youths such as those with autism and ADHD, should not hinder employment prospects. A supportive work environment that caters to individual needs is necessary for these individuals to develop their capabilities.
Empowering persons with disabilities requires comprehensive cooperation among ministries, government agencies, training institutions, and the private sector to ensure access to education, skills training, and employment. Lim also encouraged companies to engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to recruit PwD workers.
In addition, Lim mentioned the RM1.5 billion allocation for PwD under Budget 2027, which will benefit over 300,000 recipients. This includes an increase in the monthly Bedridden PwD Care and Chronically Ill Patients Allowance from RM500 to RM600 and a rise in the threshold for the Disabled Workers' Allowance from RM1,700 to RM2,000. The government also offers free public transport passes to the PwD community and will provide specialized skills training to 3,000 new PwD caregivers. Furthermore, 15 Community-Based Rehabilitation premises will be upgraded into specialized therapy centers.
