Kuala lumpur: The MADANI Government has announced an expansion in electricity bill protection for domestic users, increasing the threshold from 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 800 kWh per month. This change, effective for electricity consumption from September to December 31, was revealed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister, who also serves as the Finance Minister, stated that this enhanced subsidy is a direct response to alleviate the cost-of-living challenges faced by citizens. The measure will provide domestic users consuming up to 800 kWh per month with exemptions from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), retail charges, and the Sales and Service Tax (SST).

Anwar highlighted that recent haze and hotter weather conditions have led to increased electricity consumption, pushing households' monthly usage beyond 600 kWh and resulting in unexpectedly high bills. He assured that the MADANI Government is committed to monitoring fuel costs and energy market conditions to ensure that electricity tariff decisions balance affordability with the cost of living, electricity supply security, and the sustainability of the country's energy sector.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Energy Commission (ST) for their swift implementation of this measure. Earlier, Anwar chaired a special meeting at the Ministry of Finance to address concerns over recent electricity bill increases affecting some consumers. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
