Efforts to Safeguard National Interests Began Early in RTA Talks, Tengku Zafrul States

Kuala lumpur: Efforts to protect the country’s sovereignty and interests have been underway since the early stages of negotiations for the Malaysia-South Korea Reciprocal Trade Agreement (RTA), said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the negotiating team comprises highly experienced individuals from various ministries and agencies, many of whom were also involved in negotiations for the 19 free trade agreements (FTAs) previously signed by Malaysia. Tengku Zafrul emphasized that the team has considered all risks and aspects to ensure the agreement is beneficial for Malaysia. He noted that negotiations require a balanced approach, with certain aspects needing to be defended while others may be open to compromise.

Tengku Zafrul expressed that if there are crucial points where Malaysia cannot compromise, the team maintains a firm stance. However, he acknowledged that if there is potential for further negotiation, efforts are made to achieve the best possible outcomes. Speaking to reporters outside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), he underscored the importance of strategic negotiation.

The minister highlighted that the government remains open to receiving feedback and criticisms regarding the agreement, provided they are fact-based and not driven by political motives. He mentioned that the ministry plans to increase public understanding of the RTA by conducting more engagement sessions.

Malaysia has so far signed 19 FTAs, including agreements with the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and the recently finalized FTA with South Korea.
