Kuala lumpur: Development budget requirements to strengthen the country's border management and control were the focus of discussions between the Economy Ministry and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the matter was discussed during a courtesy call by AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain on Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir here. The ministry said the discussions focused on efforts to strengthen border management and control through infrastructure upgrades, the adoption of technology, the development of strategic assets and the enhancement of operational capacity.

"The Economy Ministry acknowledges that strengthening AKPS' capabilities through structured development planning will support smoother trade, improve the efficiency of the country's entry points, enhance border security and contribute to more resilient and sustainable economic growth," the post said.

AKPS officially began operations on Jan 1, 2025, to coordinate control at the country's entry points by integrating border enforcement functions that were previously carried out by various agencies. The agency assumed functions and positions from six core agencies at border entry points and national checkpoints, namely the Immigration Department, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department, the Health Ministry, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, and the Road Transport Department.

Previously, Mohd Shuhaily said AKPS is focused on strengthening integrity and operational efficiency while formulating its strategic direction and long-term development plan, including enhancing human resource capacity. He said the agency is also prioritising the development of smart border technology through the use of integrated biometric systems, automated cargo scanning and real-time data integration powered by artificial intelligence.
