Lembah pantai: A total of 350 e-hailing riders in the Lembah Pantai area received an unexpected Ramadan boost after Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced a one-year insurance premium sponsorship under the 'Perlindungan Tenang' scheme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said the insurance sponsorship reflects the MADANI Government's serious attention to the welfare and future of gig economy workers, including e-hailing riders. He highlighted that the initiative serves as appreciation for the riders who were considered frontliners during the Movement Control Order (MCO) and emphasized that their contributions have not been forgotten.
Fahmi stated that after the one-year sponsorship period ends, riders could continue the insurance coverage at a rate of RM100 per year. Additionally, he expressed his intention to establish a dedicated rest stop for e-hailing riders in the Lembah Pantai area, offering them a space to take short breaks while waiting for their next orders.
He noted that among the main concerns of the riders is the lack of a place to rest between jobs. He shared plans to work towards setting up a rest area, stating, "Sometimes they just need a spot to take a breather while waiting for the next order. Insya-Allah, we will work towards this."
Fahmi added that several locations have been identified, and discussions will be held with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to examine implementation aspects, including whether permanent or temporary structures can be put in place. Earlier in the program, Fahmi also presented cash assistance to the e-hailing riders who attended the event.
