Kuala lumpur: Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad extends his condolences to the families of victims who perished in recent road accidents. He emphasized that road accidents are a significant public health challenge and the fifth leading contributor to premature deaths in Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dzulkefly highlighted in a Facebook post that the Malaysia Road Fatalities Index by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) reveals an average of 18 individuals die daily in road accidents across the country, with 59 percent of these fatalities involving motorcyclists. He noted that during weekends, when motor enthusiasts gather, hospitals nationwide face a grim reality as families receive news of loved ones lost to accidents.
Dzulkefly explained that when accident cases surge, the entire hospital system must mobilize resources such as blood supply, imaging equipment, operating theatres, and specialists. He remarked that the Ministry of Health's workforce shoulders the immense responsibility of managing the healthcare needs of Malaysia's population.
The Health Minister also expressed his prayers for the grieving families to find strength and commended the Ministry of Health's emergency and trauma teams for their dedication in treating and saving accident victims. He highlighted the broader impact of road accidents, citing economic losses of at least RM3.12 million for every life lost, based on the Value of Statistical Life.
While supporting the camaraderie of large-scale motorcycle convoys, Dzulkefly expressed concern over recurring fatal accidents, particularly from the RXZ Members 8.0 gathering. He stressed the organizers' responsibility to prioritize participants' safety and incorporate road safety advocacy in every event to prevent fatalities from excessive speed.
Dzulkefly urged a shift in mindset towards moderation and safety on the roads, emphasizing the slogan 'Yang Santai, Pasti Sampai' (Take It Easy, You'll Get There Safely). He highlighted the importance of responsible riding, adherence to speed limits, and prioritizing the preservation of life.
Reports indicated several accidents involving participants traveling to the RXZ Members 8.0 gathering at the Gong Badak Motor Racing Circuit in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, and other road users. Three motorcyclists lost their lives, and two were injured in four separate accidents in Pahang. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy in Kuala Nerus sustained severe burn injuries and remains in an induced coma.
