Kuala lumpur: A total of 120 fatal accidents were recorded nationwide from 2023 to June 2026, caused by drivers under the influence (DUI) of drugs and alcohol. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali stated that of this number, 94 fatal accidents were caused by drug influence, while 26 cases involved alcohol influence.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the JSPT plans to discuss with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) to propose a review of the penalties to make them stricter and raise more awareness. Despite increased operations, many individuals remain careless, with the issue ultimately linked to personal attitudes and existing penalties that need revisiting.
"The public seems undeterred and considers this matter trivial, whereas the risk of accidents affecting innocent road users is very high," Muhammed Hasbullah said at a JSPT press conference.
Commenting on enforcement statistics from January to June 2026, Muhammed Hasbullah revealed that 1,634 Op Mabuk (drunk driving operations) were conducted nationwide, marking an increase of 136.1 percent compared to 692 operations in the same period in 2025. Arrests this year reached 949 compared to 930 during the same time last year.
Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of arrests with 268 cases, followed by Johor (223), Selangor (182), Sabah (95), and Sarawak (62). Men made up the majority of those detained, totaling 895 individuals (94.3 percent), while women numbered 54 (5.7 percent). Those aged 31 and above accounted for nearly three-quarters of total arrests.
In terms of legal actions under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987, 1,040 investigation papers were opened from January 1 to June 30 this year, compared to 870 last year. The number of cases prosecuted in court increased to 589 this year compared to 486 in 2025, while 414 cases involved sentencing compared to 334 last year.
Muhammed Hasbullah emphasized that the JSPT will continue to intensify Op Mabuk nationwide without compromising on any individual who violates the law. "Strict actions will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of all road users and to reduce accidents and loss of life due to driving under the influence of alcohol," he added.
