Kluang: Police have arrested a local man to assist in the investigation of an accident involving five vehicles that killed five people at Kilometre 27, Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam, Kluang.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kluang district police chief ACP Bahrin Mohd Noh stated that the 19-year-old man was believed to be driving a Mercedes Benz A250 at high speed and recklessly alongside a BMW 530e driven by a 22-year-old local man, who is also his elder brother. The accident occurred at 1.15 pm when the BMW 530e lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided with a Perodua Alza, Toyota Vios, Proton Wira, and another Mercedes Benz.
Bahrin explained that the driver of the BMW 530e died after the vehicle entered a ravine, along with four others: the driver of the Toyota Vios, a 36-year-old local man, his 33-year-old wife, and two family members, a 73-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. "The driver and passenger of the Toyota Vios died at the scene due to severe head and body injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the BMW 530e died on the way to the hospital," he said in a statement.
He added that two passengers of the Perodua Alza, an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl with head injuries, are receiving treatment at the Red Zone, Emergency Ward of the Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital (HEBHK) Kluang. The driver of the Perodua Alza, a 43-year-old local man, suffered leg injuries, while the driver of the Proton Wira, a 22-year-old local man, sustained injuries to the mouth.
Meanwhile, the driver of the second Mercedes Benz, a 57-year-old local woman, sustained minor injuries to the chest and face, but her two passengers were unharmed. Bahrin mentioned that all injured victims are receiving treatment at HEBHK, and the urine test results found the 19-year-old man to be negative for drugs.
The police have seized the Mercedes Benz A250, and the case is under investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
