Dewan Rakyat Special Sitting Convenes on May 5 to Address US Tariffs Impact

Kuala Lumpur: The special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat on May 5, aimed at discussing the impact of United States actions on the Malaysian economy, will be conducted at the request of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Parliament confirmed that this session is convened under Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders to address current issues that are urgent and beneficial to the people.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the sitting will feature briefings from ministers under Standing Order 14(1)(i) regarding the US decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on all imports, examining its impact on the Malaysian economy, and the government’s response across various ministries and sectors. The discussions will involve coordinating short and medium-term solutions, reviewing industrial policies, and planning for the country’s long-term economic strategy in light of the international trade war.

Parliament also stated that the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat will permit Honourable Members to seek clarification and share their views during the briefing session. This special sitting is anticipated to facilitate constructive debate and provide transparent information to the public on government measures addressing the current global economic challenges.

The session, scheduled to start at 11 am, will be broadcast live and can be accessed on the official YouTube channel of the Parliament.
