Deputy National Unity Minister Warns Influencers Against Exploiting Sensitive Issues

Kuala Lumpur:Social media influencers have been cautioned against exploiting issues related to race, religion, and royalty (3R) for online content, as it could disrupt harmony in the multiracial society.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy National Unity Minister R. Yuneswaran emphasized the responsibility of influencers with large followings to focus on spreading positive values rather than engaging in content that could inflame 3R sentiments.

Yuneswaran urged influencers to avoid issues involving 3R, noting that they may be unaware of the specific religious rituals or customs of certain communities, especially if they do not belong to that religion. He highlighted the potential for positive collaboration with the National Unity Ministry in promoting unity.

His comments followed a viral incident involving an influencer who allegedly participated in a religious ceremony during the Thaipusam celebration at Batu Caves, Selangor. Yuneswaran stated that the ministry takes such issues seriously and has left the investigation to the religious authorities and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

He also advised the public not to jump to conclusions or politicize the matter, urging patience while authorities conduct their investigation. Additionally, Yuneswaran invited influencers to collaborate with the ministry in promoting national values such as the Federal Constitution, the Rukun Negara, and the National Nationhood Programme.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) confirmed that it had begun investigating a viral post involving an individual suspected of being Muslim participating in another religion's ritual, which may contravene Islamic law.
