Accra:The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia is creating a significant demand for a specialized automotive workforce. As EVs increasingly populate Malaysian roads, the skills required to maintain these vehicles differ greatly from those needed for conventional cars. This evolution in technology requires technicians to master high-voltage systems, intricate electronic diagnostics, and advanced battery technology.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's automotive industry must adapt to this shift, not just by increasing the number of technicians, but by fostering professionals with the expertise necessary for advanced vehicle technologies. PRO-NET, a subsidiary of PROTON Holdings Bhd, emphasizes the importance of developing human capital and technical capabilities alongside the rising adoption of EVs.
Zhang Qiang, the chief executive officer of PRO-NET, highlighted the necessity of evolving workforce skills to keep pace with Proton e.MAS's growth. Initiatives include investing in EV after-sales capabilities and upskilling technicians through collaborations with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and TVET MARA. These partnerships focus on structured training and certification, preparing technicians for the unique challenges of EV maintenance.
The Proton e.MAS brand significantly contributed to the surge in EV registrations, accounting for 61% of battery electric vehicle registrations as of August 2026. This growth underscores the need for specialized training, such as the e.MAS Certified Technician Programme, which concentrates on high-voltage systems and diagnostics, and the e.MAS Certified Service Advisor Programme, aimed at enhancing service advisors' understanding of EV products.
In August, a milestone was achieved when 37 technicians from 25 Proton e.MAS dealerships received Level 2 EV certification from TVET MARA, following intensive training and assessments. The expansion of Proton e.MAS's after-sales network includes 60 dealerships equipped with EV diagnostic tools and a comprehensive range of services.
The inaugural e.MAS Electrified Excellence Competition 2026 further supports this development by evaluating technicians' real-world skills through practical challenges. These initiatives align with Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which focuses on talent development as a key aspect of industrial transformation.
As Malaysia continues to embrace EV technology, ensuring a skilled workforce capable of maintaining and supporting these sophisticated vehicles is crucial for the country's automotive future.
