Decision to Dissolve State Assemblies Lies with State Governments – PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today emphasized that the authority to dissolve a state legislative assembly is vested with the respective state governments.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stated that the federal government continues to concentrate on fulfilling its responsibilities and advancing its agenda. He noted, "I'm focusing on my job. The problem is some of these people don't think of this. We should focus on the job."

Following a query about whether potential state elections could disrupt the administration's focus, Anwar reiterated that it is the state government's decision while the federal government maintains its priorities and commitment to its work. He expressed these views while speaking to reporters at the Energy Transition Conference 2026 (ETCon26).

The context for Anwar's comments includes Johor's recent decision to dissolve its state legislative assembly on June 1, setting the stage for an election within 60 days. In the previous month, Anwar had mentioned the possibility of a snap general election if tensions within the ruling coalition escalated, with the next general election scheduled for the following year.
