Kuala lumpur: The Crop Seed Quality Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year, according to Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi. He stated that the bill is currently in the engagement stage, where feedback from industry players is being gathered. This step is crucial to ensure that farmers’ rights to quality seed supplies are protected.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Nor Sam Alwi emphasized the importance of the bill as a means to ensure farmers purchase quality seeds. Currently, farmers lack a proper channel to lodge complaints if they receive seeds that are of poor quality or do not meet specifications. He highlighted the absence of a specific act to take action against those selling substandard seeds.

During a press conference following the opening of the Department of Agriculture’s Plant Subsector Development Symposium 2025, Nor Sam Alwi discussed the significance of the initiative. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu was also present at the event.

In his speech, Mohamad Sabu noted that the government is working to streamline laws related to seeds. This is aimed at preventing farmers from being deceived or suffering losses due to fake or poor-quality seeds. He assured farmers that the proposed changes are designed to protect and safeguard their interests, aligning with the ministry’s ongoing efforts.
