Creative Industry Players Urged to Understand Employment Contracts

Kuala Lampur:First paragraph of the news story.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, creative industry players must ensure they have and understand employment contracts to safeguard their rights and income, particularly in situations involving delayed payments. Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, CEO of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), highlighted that many industry workers still operate without formal contracts, complicating disputes over payments or terminations.

Azmir emphasized the importance of contract knowledge, noting that some individuals sign agreements without comprehending them fully. He addressed these issues while speaking as a panelist at a forum titled 'Art, Popularity and Financial Survival: Empowering the Creative Industry Through the Second Chance Policy (DPK).' The event was organized by the Malaysian Department of Insolvency in collaboration with FINAS to enhance financial management awareness among creative professionals.

He further stressed the need for industry players to understand their contractual rights, such as the use of their likenesses through artificial intelligence (AI), which might impact their earnings. Azmir cited an example where an actor's image could be utilized for extended periods without their knowledge or consent due to a lack of contract awareness.

Azmir also recommended that industry associations collaborate with FINAS to bolster artists' managers' expertise in financial management and career planning. He suggested that entrepreneurship training be provided early to those interested in business ventures, connecting them with agencies like the Malaysian People's Trust (MARA) and SME Corp Malaysia to better prepare for times when job opportunities may wane.

Additionally, industry players were encouraged not to hesitate in seeking help if they encounter financial troubles or bankruptcy. Azmir pointed out that agencies such as the Insolvency Department, the Credit Counselling and Management Agency (AKPK), zakat centres, and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) offer assistance to those in need.
