Countries Should Use WTO Platform To Resolve Trade Issues, Problems – PM Anwar

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim strongly believes that trading countries should use the World Trade Organisation (WTO) platform to resolve trade issues and problems, including tariffs. Anwar, who is also the ASEAN chair for 2025, said this was ASEAN’s position whereby the pursuit of free trade should be done through mechanisms such as the Geneva-based global trade body and not unilaterally.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that if adjustments or corrections were necessary, ASEAN could address even complex issues like tariffs through the WTO mechanism. He expressed ASEAN’s displeasure and disagreement with the United States’ unilateral decision to impose tariffs. The Prime Minister criticized “megaphone diplomacy” in a clear reference to the US, responding to questions at the 12th ASEAN Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting (AFMGM).

Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, underscored the importance of ASEAN’s collective engagement to effectively persuade the US, an economic superpower. He mentioned a 90-day reprieve as a temporary measure and stressed the need for enhanced trade, investment, and collaboration in digital and energy sectors. Anwar called for all countries, including the US, to respect a rules-based order, advocating for a solution through dialogue and cooperation.
