Counselling Services Play Crucial Role for Women Facing Domestic Violence: Melaka Exco

Melaka:<Text>

Counselling sessions and advisory services offered by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and the Social Welfare Department (JKM) are essential in helping women, particularly mothers, dealing with domestic violence and abuse.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Melaka Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Noordin stated that an increasing number of women are seeking assistance and support through these platforms to address domestic conflicts in a more secure and organized manner. These counselling sessions not only provide emotional support but also guide victims on legal rights, protection, and actions available in situations involving domestic abuse or mistreatment.

Datuk Kalsom noted that only eight cases of domestic violence and abuse were reported last year, and no serious or alarming cases have been recorded this year. She credited the control of such cases to the assistance provide d to many women and couples facing family issues, including domestic violence, through counselling sessions and early intervention programs conducted by LPPKN and JKM.

She emphasized the commitment of the state government to ensure mothers realize they are not alone and have access to various safe and trusted channels for seeking help. A significant challenge is that some women remain afraid or ashamed to report being victims of physical, emotional, or domestic abuse. However, when reports are made, it indicates a societal shift towards courage in seeking help and not keeping these problems hidden.

Kalsom also highlighted the positive impact of various advocacy, information, and awareness programs implemented by LPPKN, JKM, and other agencies. She encouraged mothers to become more digitally literate to quickly access information, especially regarding women's rights, welfare assistance, and official complaint channels provided by the government.
