Nancy: The cost of living is among the factors influencing young people's decisions to marry and have children, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She said young people were now more cautious and considered their financial capacity before getting married and starting a family.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, some young individuals choose not to have children because they are not financially ready. Nancy emphasized that they cannot be blamed for not being ready. She shared these insights during a press conference after officiating the 2026 World Population Day celebration.

To address these concerns, Nancy highlighted the government's SmartStart programme, which provides prospective couples with comprehensive preparation, including economic and financial management. Additionally, the programme offers assistance for those facing fertility issues through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatments.

Furthermore, Nancy mentioned that the government promotes marital harmony through various initiatives, such as a 'second honeymoon' programme for couples within the first five years of marriage. She clarified that the 'second honeymoon' does not imply a remarriage but rather offers activities to help couples reconnect and strengthen their relationship.

In efforts to reach those in need, Nancy stated the government is committed to directly engaging communities to introduce welfare services offered by the ministry through initiatives like Kembara Kasih.
