Cops Urge Employers to Enforce Safe Handling of Sharp Tools in Wake of Fatal Accident

Teluk intan: Police have issued a call to employers, urging them to provide clear instructions to their workers about the careful handling of sharp tools. This advisory aims to ensure the safety of road users, as highlighted by a recent tragic incident.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin emphasized the importance of this measure. Tools such as sickles, hoes, or machetes, which are not classified as scheduled weapons, can be carried freely for daily use. Noor Hisam advised employers to make sure their staff remain mindful of their own safety and that of others, particularly on the roads. Currently, he noted, the situation does not warrant legal action, but preventive measures are crucial.

This advisory follows a call from the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) for authorities to investigate and take action against an employer after a student's death in Teluk Intan. The student, Adham Faisal, from Teluk Intan Agricultural Vocational College, tragically lost his life when a long-handled sickle, carried by another motorcyclist, struck him. The incident, which occurred at Batu 4, Kampung Selabak, also resulted in injuries to Adham's 17-year-old friend, who is now receiving treatment.

In response to the incident, police have detained two Indonesian men, aged 39 and 52, to aid in the investigation. Noor Hisam stated that preliminary investigations indicate negligence on the part of the individual transporting the sickle, as it was carried in a way that posed a danger to others. Further investigations are focusing on various aspects, including the immigration status of the suspects, in line with the Immigration Act provisions.
