Kuala perlis: The KomaLaut Mangrove Forest site in Kuala Perlis should be considered for gazettement as a Permanent Reserved Forest to ensure the continuity of conservation efforts and safeguard the sustainability of the area in the future. The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, emphasized the importance of preserving the mangrove forest area in a more systematic manner to protect it from development threats that could impact its ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the KomaLaut Mangrove Forest site has been managed by the Perlis Forestry Department since 2018, following approval by state authorities. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin highlighted this during the inauguration of a mangrove tree-planting project in conjunction with International Forest Day 2026 at KomaLaut.
The Raja Muda expressed that the tree-planting initiative is not just a symbolic gesture but a long-term investment for the ecosystem's survival, community well-being, and the preservation of natural heritage for future generations. He noted that the replanting effort aligns with the global sustainable development agenda, particularly SDG 14, Life Below Water, and the Forest Landscape Restoration initiative under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin emphasized the continuous commitment needed to tackle climate change challenges while ensuring natural ecosystems are preserved. This requires the involvement and cooperation of various parties. He also stressed the importance of proper maintenance and monitoring of every mangrove tree planted to achieve the programme's objectives.
He extended his congratulations and appreciation to all parties involved in the initiative, including the APPGM-SDG under the Malaysian Parliament, the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (Perlis), Malaysia International Culture Exchange Club, Malaysian Youth Council, and Perlis Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Perlis CCCI). Their contributions were pivotal to the programme's success.
