Hilir Perak: A director of an electrical goods company lost RM203,200 after being duped by a phone scam syndicate posing as a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal reported that police received a complaint on Tuesday from a 38-year-old man who had fallen victim to the scam since February.
The initial investigation revealed that the victim, who was at home in Hutan Melintang on February 21, received a WhatsApp message from an individual pretending to be a representative from Ipoh KBS. The suspect offered a contract to the victim’s company to supply electrical equipment, specifically power stations, with a contract value of RM203,200.
The suspect provided the victim with a counterfeit government order letter under the KBS name via WhatsApp, convincing the victim that his company had secured the contract. Bakri explained that the victim was then instructed to contact a specific company for the contract procedures related to the electrical equipment supply.
The victim followed the suspect’s instructions and made three online money transfers into three different bank accounts, totaling RM203,200. After completing the transactions, the victim grew suspicious and reached out to the KBS to verify the contract’s legitimacy, only to learn that no such contract existed.
