Climate Change Bill Set for Tabling in Dewan Rakyat with Cabinet Approval

Kuala Lumpur:The Climate Change Bill is anticipated to be presented during the current Dewan Rakyat sitting once it receives approval from the Cabinet, as stated by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Cabinet has agreed in principle to the drafting of the Bill. Engagement sessions with state governments, including Sabah and Sarawak, have been completed to ensure the protection of state rights and legislative sovereignty.

Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup informed reporters of the procedure, explaining that after obtaining the necessary approval, the secretary of the Dewan Rakyat will be notified to table the Bill during the ongoing session. This announcement was made at the Malaysia International Green Technology and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM) 2026 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Regarding transboundary haze, Malaysia is awaiting Indonesia's official approval to send assistance for extinguishing forest fires. While no specific date has been set, Malaysia is prepared with assets, expertise, and manpower to offer help.

An official letter offering assistance has been sent to Indonesia's Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat. Additionally, discussions were held by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during a recent visit to Indonesia, where he met with President Prabowo Subianto and acquired approval. Coordination of procedures is now underway through the Foreign Ministry with Indonesian authorities.

Addressing air quality, Minister Arthur noted that the SOPs under the National Haze Action Plan are ready for activation based on Air Pollutant Index readings. If necessary, the Education Ministry will be informed to take actions under its authority. The public is advised to avoid outdoor activities, and those with low immunity are encouraged to stay indoors, wear face masks, and stay hydrated.
